"Do You Need a Photography Degree to Be a Successful Photographer?"

The one question that i have wondered myself as i pursue a bachelor's degree in photography. Also, it's not encouraging to read that the author of the article states, "my best advice is to never major in photography (a minor is fine.)" I think in today's business the person with the best portfolio is going to get the job even if the other person has the degree.

We all learn photography from somewhere, whether it's sitting in a classroom or learning by working along side a professional. In a classroom, you can learn the style of many photographers to create and mold your own style. If you were to work along side just one person, your style could become very similar to theirs. I think an education in photography is very valuable and it's why I'm still here after almost 5 years. so yes you can be successful without a degree in photography, but i think you will get higher in the business faster if you have an education.

"Photography Can Be Like Fashion, Or It Can Be a Lifelong Linear Process"

This blog post was very inspiring and encouraging to go and make photography outside of the "norm". It goes into great depth over "found" photography over "created" photography. It talks about how we should spend more time creating and not just documenting. As I begin to form my own style i lean more towards a documentary approach. Posts like this is always challenging to me to step out of my comfort zone, like Vaughn has told me so many times to do.

Spring Break in South Padre

For the 3rd year in a row i got the opportunity to be a part of Beach Reach Ministries in South Padre during spring break. my week consisted of giving free van rides, serving pan cakes outside of the bar, cleaning the beach early in the morning, assisting with building a sand sculpture, taking part in some powerful worship inside of the sand bar, seeing God move in the lives of many spring breakers, and seeing people be baptized in the ocean at the end of the week. it truely was an amazing week! these pictures are of some of my team members and the things we did but also of spring breakers on the beach. i tried to capture both sides of the south padre experience.

camera obscura's

over the break i experimented with camera obscura's. below you will see that i turned my bedroom and kitchen into cameras. how it works is i covered all light coming through the window with cardboard. I then cut a hole the size of a penny into the card board. that small hole is what is projecting the image upside down on to the wall. so here i have the original image first and then a second that's rotated so you can see the image that is being projected from outside.
